The Fierce Knight is a blend of contemporary and traditional Staunton design featuring knights that are carved with realistic features. The perked ears, eyes, mouth, and mane create a fierce looking countenance that gives this set its name. The ebonized pieces are polished to an obsidian black finish and has no visible grain while the cream colored natural boxwood is the perfect wood for the white chess pieces. The king is 4 inch tall and has a base diameter of 1.75 inch. The pieces are heavily weighted for exceptional stability on the chessboard and have thick green baize pads for easily sliding from square to square and a soft feel when placing. We include 2 spare queens for pawn promotion and a certificate of authenticity so you will always know what the chess set is, where it came from, and when it was made. This Walnut Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chessboard offers a luxurious back drop for these special chess pieces. Handcrafted from premium veneer, this chessboard highlights the deep, rich hues of the walnut burl contrasted with the golden tones of the bird's-eye maple. The squares are surrounded with a wide black delimiter and a black border on the outside emphasizes the bird's-eye maple frame. A semi-gloss polyurethane finish both protects and enhances the color of the wood. The squares are 2.125 inch with an overall footprint of 21.5 inch. Reminiscent of the old heirloom quality chess boxes from years ago, the Bird's-Eye Maple Classic Chess Box is beautifully constructed. The box is covered in beautiful bird's-eye maple veneer that perfectly matches the chessboard squares and frame with a lustrous semi-gloss polyurethane finish. The interior is lined with a thick emerald-green baize just like those used for the pads on our chess pieces. The box has a divider in the center for conveniently storing the black and white pieces separately. We use high quality brass plated quadrant hinges that neatly recess into the wall of the box and a brass plated lock and key for securing the lid when closed.
